A dream about one's wife functions much like a barometer of the marriage itself — a sense of the domestic order, care, and partnership currently in place — and, for men not yet married, can carry the same charge as a symbol of the commitment they're moving toward or weighing.
A wife who is warm, capable, or expecting. This tends to reflect a sense of a well-tended domestic life, or a partnership that feels genuinely generative, producing something — literal or figurative — that the dreamer values.
A wife who is ill, unreachable, or somehow transformed into someone else. This more often points to anxiety about losing connection to that domestic order, or a sense that a partner is changing in ways not yet fully acknowledged between them.
What changes the reading. And 「糟糠之妻不下堂」 (zāo kāng zhī qī bù xià táng, the wife of the husk-and-chaff years is not sent from the hall) is loyalty to the spouse of one's hard times — the phrase standing behind dreams that return to a marriage's earliest, poorest years. Two phrases carry the bond's arc. 「相濡以沫」 (xiāng rú yǐ mò, moistening each other with what little is left) — the old image of two fish in a drying pond keeping each other alive — names sustaining one another through hardship, and 「少来夫妻老来伴」 (shào lái fū qī lǎo lái bàn, spouses in youth, companions in age) names what the marriage becomes across time; between them they hold the dreams of a marriage weathering something, or simply grown old together. All of it reports how the tradition speaks of a wife; none of it predicts anything about one.
