Most writing about dreams focuses on the spectacular ones. The systematic research points somewhere else entirely. When investigators stopped selecting the interesting dreams and started counting everything in large collections of ordinary dream reports, what emerged was surprisingly dull — and that dullness turned out to be the finding.
The continuity hypothesis holds that dreaming is continuous with waking thought. Dreams, on this view, are about what the dreamer is actually concerned with: their relationships, their work, their preoccupations, the places they spend time and the people they spend it with. Dreaming is not a separate mode of mental life with its own agenda but the same mind, running under different conditions — offline, without sensory input, with reduced self-reflection and looser constraints on plausibility.
The evidence base for this is unusually solid, because it is built on counting rather than on interpretation. Calvin Hall and Robert Van de Castle developed a coding system that turns dream reports into quantifiable data: characters, social interactions, settings, emotions, aggression, friendliness, misfortune, success and failure, each scored by explicit rules so different researchers score the same report the same way. G. William Domhoff has spent decades applying and extending this approach across very large collections of dream reports, including long series from single individuals recorded over years.
What that work found is that dream content is remarkably stable and remarkably ordinary. The people who appear most often in someone's dreams are the people who matter most in their life. The settings are familiar. The activities are mostly things the dreamer actually does. Individual patterns hold steady over years, sometimes decades, and they track the dreamer's real concerns closely enough that someone who knows the coding can infer a good deal about a person's waking life from a long dream series. Dreaming about a difficult colleague during a difficult period at work is not a symbol to decode. It is the single most predictable thing dreaming does.
This makes the continuity hypothesis quietly the strongest challenge to symbol-dictionary approaches, and a more serious one than the argument from brain physiology. It does not say dreams are meaningless. It says the meaning is usually on the surface — that the dream is about what it appears to be about, because dream content mirrors waking concerns rather than encoding them.
The discontinuities are real, though, and the theory does not cover all of them. Dreams are not straightforward continuations of waking life. Impossible things happen and are accepted without question. Dead relatives appear alive. Locations merge. The dreamer flies, loses teeth, is unprepared for an exam sat twenty years ago. Time and causality behave loosely. Continuity says nothing about why the mundane material is delivered in such a strange package, and that strangeness is exactly what the physiological accounts explain best.
There is also a selection effect in the theory's own favour that a careful reader should notice. Dream reports come from what people can recall, and what people recall is skewed toward the memorable. Continuity researchers work with large collections partly to overcome this, but the underlying data is still filtered through recall. The reverse bias is stronger — collections that select only dramatic dreams badly misrepresent what dreaming is like — but neither is perfectly clean.
The most useful way to hold the continuity hypothesis is as a strong default rather than a complete account. Assume a dream is about your life until something in it demands otherwise, because that assumption is right far more often than not. Then notice that the mechanism delivering that material is doing something strange to it — and that the strangeness has its own explanation, in the physiology of the sleeping brain rather than in a hidden message.
