What it means to dream about a stranger: a threatening or a helpful figure, and how different traditions interpret it.
A stranger in a dream is one of the most common yet least obvious figures: someone the dreamer has never seen, who nonetheless ends up at the center of the story. The most common psychological reading is that this isn't "someone from outside" at all, but a repressed or not-yet-acknowledged part of the dreamer themselves.
A threatening stranger. When the stranger chases or frightens, it often reflects anxiety about something in oneself the dreamer isn't yet ready to admit — a trait, a desire, or a decision being avoided.
A stranger who helps or gives something. A guiding or gift-giving stranger, by contrast, is usually read the opposite way — as a signal about a resource or insight the dreamer already has, just not yet recognized as their own.

In some classical interpretations, a stranger in a dream is treated as a messenger: what they say or hand over can carry a direct meaning for the dreamer's coming days, so this tradition pays particular attention not to the stranger's appearance but to their words or actions.
In a Jungian reading, the stranger is a classic image of the Shadow or the Anima/Animus, depending on the figure's gender — the part of the psyche left unacknowledged in daily life until it surfaces in a dream.
In Chinese folk tradition, meeting a stranger who gives something or offers parting words is considered a good omen — a herald of luck or a significant encounter in waking life.
